Colm Kelly … Founder of Do Business Smarter, a business coaching, consulting and strategy training center just for small business owners, joins me today to have a discussion on 12 core business ownership skills and marketing strategies you need to survive and thrive in 2015 and beyond. Colm has been helping small business owners work smarter for over 20 years, and today I want to pick his brain on why so many business owners seem to struggle for ever while others to make it to the top.
Colm has met, spoken to and worked with thousands of small business owners during his 20 plus years as a business owner and business adviser. Many of those business owners achieved reasonable success, some completely failed, but a few of them achieved HUGE success. Not because their product or service was any better, but because the owners were serious and committed to constant improvement. Because of their commitment and drive, they achieved the ultimate business owners dream; a business that makes them huge profits without them having to be there all the time. Most business owners today are experts in their field – they have experience, skill and a drive to succeed, yet still 96% of them fail in the first 7 years. The folks that fail didn’t do so because they didn’t know their product or service, they failed because they didn’t have a solid business structure and system to follow.
If you are a small business owner that is serious about growth and wanting to work smarter not harder … this podcast is for you!
Today my guest is Lark Doley. Professionally, Lark served as an Executive Director of a computer association for 5 years and then incorporated a computer peripheral devices manufacturing company that I operated for 12 years. Currently I am responsible for the Professional Development of our employees at the Texas Project of MAXIMUS.
Lark Doley joined Toastmasters International in 1990 AFTER attending their annual convention in Dallas as a guest. She was so inspired by the International Speech competition that she decided to join the organization. Lark joined Toastmasters to improve her communication skills, but what she found out very early into her membership was that Toastmasters has a strong leadership program as well. In August at the Toastmasters Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Lark was elected Second Vice President of the organization. She will be visiting San Diego beginning on October 13. We are here today to talk with her about Toastmasters and why she will be in San Diego next week.
Local Fame Media is the last stop a local business will need to make in their marketing journey, search engine optimization. We help local businesses to gain maximum exposure with minimal effort, and we have a blast helping them to become the recognized authority or expert in their industry. This usually translates to celebrity status. And as you know, customers will pay more money for a good or service from someone who’s a celebrity.
Are you spinning your wheels trying to get new business? Have you been burned by so-called internet marketing companies that didn’t affect your bottom line the way you had hoped? Are you dissatisfied with the notion that you’ll be stuck in the purgatory of paying for ads for the rest of your business life without building any equity into your website and online presence?

Today my guest is Linda Gorin, The Best to You. Linda and I will be talking about her business and next weekend’s celebration of Mother’s Day.
The Best to You began as a hobby in 1984. Soon, creating festive gifts for special people became a passion. Back then, the dining room table was the design area and a big order was more than six baskets at one time. It’s fun to remember when the thought of having their own gift basket company seemed like just a dream. It started to become a reality when they opened our first little shop in 1985. As the business grew, Linda celebrated six expansions. Today, The Best to You enjoys a reputation as one of the finest gift basket companies in the industry. They have been featured on Channel 8 and Channel 10 numerous times. The Best to You is in the business of delivering memories!
The Best to You team takes that very seriously. We deliver joy and good will. We build grand displays of appreciation. We send “you can do it!” style encouragement, and “we’re all thinking of you” style comfort. We deliver “work of art” welcomes and memorable farewells. We deliver fun and excitement that create impromptu celebrations. We send morale skyrocketing with our employee thank you gifts and deliver warm, fuzzy feelings of home with our college care packages. We’ve been responsible for expedited wedding proposals, rekindled romances, and when someone’s having a horrible day, we can change tears to smiles.
Our team of creative imagineers is constantly thinking of new and unique designs to thrill and delight. They are master memory makers! If you ever have a custom request, a question, or just need some additional information, feel free to call. We love hearing from you!
In this episode, I’ll share with you how we are being measured on our influence by various sites like Klout, Kred, Brandify and PeerIndex. I’ll share why I think this is how you should measure your influence, rather than the number of followers, fans, etc you have on each of your social media sites.
